The
Waste Information Management
System (WIMS) is a web-based
system, built for the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE)
by the Applied Research
Center (ARC) at Florida
International University
(FIU). WIMS provides a
user-friendly online system
to gather, organize, and
present waste forecast
data from DOE sites and
provides the tools necessary
to easily visualize, understand,
and manage the vast volumes,
material classes, and disposition
pathways.
Users
need to register and can
then immediately access
the system. Registered
users can view information
online or can generate
reports which can be exported
in different formats and
downloaded. WIMS can be
accessed at the following
URL: http://wims.arc.fiu.edu/wims/.
In
order to register with
the WIMS, click on the Register link
on the homepage (Figure
1).

Feature.
Three report options are
available from this page. The
first, Waste Stream Report,
can be used to export the
waste forecast data from
WIMS to Excel, PDF, TIFF
as well as other formats.
It will contain all of
the columns and rows from
the forecast data display
but will not be formatted
to print. The next
two report options are
designed to aid the user
in printing the waste forecast
data. Because the
number of columns can not
be formatted onto a single
page and still be readable,
the columns are broken
into 2 separate reports. The
Waste Stream Info Report
contains all the columns
that identify the wastestream,
but no waste volume data. The
Waste Stream Forecast Report
contains all the forecast
waste volume data as well
as the reporting site,
the disposition facility,
and the waste stream field
identification number.
Clicking on any of the
three View Report buttons
will bring up the parameter
selection drop-down menus
as shown in Figure 23. Click
on the down arrow beside
each of the parameters
(Waste From, Waste To,
and Waste Type) to select
the data for your report.
Once your selections are
made, click on the View
Report button located
on the right. A new report
will be generated based
on the selected parameters.

Figure 23. WIMS Reports pull-down
menus for selection of
report parameters.
Once
the report is generated,
use the “Select a
format” drop-down
menu to choose one of several
formatting options: HTML,
Excel, Web archive, PDF,
TIFF, CSV, or XML. After
choosing the preferred
format, click on the Export link
(Figure 24).

display and export selection.
In order to view the downloaded
and formatted report, choose
if you want to Open or
Save the file (Figure 25).
If the “Save” option
is selected, you must select
a location within the computer
in which to save the file.
Some downloading/conversion
processes may take a long
time. If the “Open”
option is selected, the
report will open in the
selected format (e.g.,
Excel as shown in Figure
26). The user can
then save and/or print
the file using the tools
in their selected format
software.
